چکیده
Sequential stimulation of the granular layer of the cerebellar cortex in vitro using 11 linearly aligned stimulating electrodes leads to massive population activity in the parallel fiber system and to spike activity in Purkinje cells (Heck, D., Neurosci. Lett., 157 (1993) 95–98; Heck, D., Naturwissenschaften, 82 (1995) 201–2030). The induced parallel fiber activity, however, might have been a result of direct stimulation of parallel fibers themselves and not of stimulation of granular cells or their ascending axons. We report here that using sequential ‘moving’ stimuli and varying the distance covered by the ‘movement’, parallel fiber population spike amplitude increases with distance and saturates for distances longer than 1.0 mm. This effect cannot be explained if parallel fibers are directly stimulated, but requires stimulation of the granular cells or their ascending axons. We conclude that the population spike activity and Purkinje cell responses induced by sequential stimulation of the granular layer of the cerebellar cortex slices in this and earlier experiments consists of orthodromic parallel fiber spikes. 1999 Published by Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. This study sought to analyze the postural responses induced by separately or simultaneously vibrating with different frequencies the forefoot and rear foot zones of both soles in standing subjects. Stimulating each zone separately resulted in spatially oriented body tilts; their amplitude and velocity varied linearly according to the frequency, and their direction was always opposite to the pla...

To determine the role of cytokines in the nervous system, we examined the effect of interleukin-12(IL-12) on the nerve regeneration of mouse superior cervical ganglion cells (SCG). IL-12 enhanced the neurite outgrowth in a concentrationdependent manner. Immunocytochemical studies demonstrated the expression of IL-12 receptors in neuronal bodies and neurites. The mRNA expression of IL-12 recepto...

Damage to the primary visual cortex (V1) destroys the major source of anatomical input to extrastriate cortical areas (V2, V3, V4 and V5) and produces cortical blindness ± an absence of any sensation of light and colour ± in the visual ®eld contralateral to the side of the lesion. Neuroimaging studies, nevertheless, have recently demonstrated dorsal and ventral extrastriate activation for stati...

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while subjects monitored a visually presented sequence of stimuli that provided information about both a temporal pattern (rhythm) and a spatial pattern, and responded to rhythmical or spatial deviants. A third task, which required the monitoring of the same sequence for screen flickers served as a perceptual baseline condition and controlled for re...

In the ̄occulus of pigeons, as in other species, there are two major types of Purkinje cell responses to rotational optokinetic stimuli. One type prefers rotation about the vertical axis (VA neurons) whereas the other prefers rotation about an horizontal axis oriented at 1358 ipsilateral azimuth (H-135 neurons). In this study, we injected the retrograde tracer cholera toxin subunit B into the V...
